Most apartment buildings in Cairo come with their own outdoor staircase, to dump your trash bags (and other stuff you no longer need) on for the garbageman.
They are desolate areas, mostly inhabited by rats and cats. This one I found on Zamalek, in the apartment building of a friend. The light coming from one of the apartments downstairs made it look particularly spooky.
There's an outdoor staircase outside the Australian Hostel in downtown Cairo that looks great too.
