New book review: Sex and the Citadel

Since 2011, much has been written about the Arab Spring and Egypt in particular. Most have covered politics, history, the east-west paradigm, or religion, but Canadian-Egyptian writer Shereen El Feki chose a very different point of departure. In her book, Sex and the Citadel: Intimate Life in a Changing Arab World, she explores sexuality in the Middle East and the taboos and customs that go with it.

"If you really want to know a people, start by looking inside their bedrooms", El Feki says, explaining her interest in the topic. And she's got a point; insight into the rites and rituals surrounding people's attitudes and behaviour towards sex indeed provides a wealth of knowledge about their culture.

Sexual harassment in Egypt: facts and figures

For an article I am currently writing I was searching for facts and figures on sexual harassment in Egypt. I came across a 2013 UN Women report that was released recently. 

I think it’s fairly new research, as I haven’t seen much reporting on it. 

As expected, the report is collection of sad statistics, starting with the fact that 99,3% of female respondents claim to have faced sexual harassment. 49,2% of the victims says it happens daily, 19,2% weekly, 7,3% monthly and for only 3,4% it was a single event.

Nieuwe column: Seksuele intimidatie in Egypte - de feiten op een rijtje

Seksuele intimidatie is een ‘hot’ item in Egypte. Ik schreef al eerder over de problemen met seksueel geweld: ik sprak met een slachtoffer van een massaverkrachting op Tahrir en beschreef hoe Egyptische vrouwen over het algemeen hun mannetje staan tegenover degenen die hen lastig vallen.

Voor een nieuw artikel dat ik aan het schrijven ben had ik een betrouwbare bron naar harde cijfers over seksuele intimidatie in Egypte nodig. Ik stuitte op een onderzoek van de Verenigde Naties, uit 2013.

Treurig
Niet geheel onverwacht is het een opeenstapeling van uitermate treurige statistieken, te beginnen met het feit dat 99,3% van de vrouwelijke respondenten aangeeft ooit te maken gehad te hebben met seksuele intimidatie. Van de slachtoffers meldt 49,2% er dagelijks last van te hebben, 19,2% wekelijks, 7,3% maandelijks en bij slechts 3,4% was het eenmalig.
