Running from the tear gas at Simon Bolivar square (photo)

Clashes at Simon Bolivar square

Picture taken yesterday (28th November).

Didn't stay very long, because the harassment was absolutely horrible. I ended up scratching one man in his face with my key, because he wouldn't back down. Good times.

New review for Cairo360: Flying Lotus - Until The Quiet Comes

Flying Lotus, known to his friends as Steven Ellison, is the great-nephew of the late jazz pianist Alice Coltrane – wife of saxophonist and jazz big-wig John Coltrane. He pays homage to these musical roots in his own music to create intelligent dance music drenched in syncopated beats and experimental sound palettes.

Until the Quiet Comes is Ellison’s fourth full-length album. His previous three records received increasing, and almost unanimous, critical acclaim, helping him build a solid name for himself. Needless to say, expectations for Until the Quiet Comes were pretty high upon release.

Short interview on Dutch radio (audio)

I did a short interview with Dutch Radio 1 on Saturday morning. You can listen to it below (in Dutch, obviously).

Pictures of Friday's protest on Tahrir

First anniversary of Mohammed Mahmoud clashes
Tahrir was busy on Friday, maybe around 20.000 people, but nowhere near as busy as it was back in January 2011.

After a while it turned violent and the riot police started doing charges. I got stuck behind the police line, so I got to see it from the other side. Officers were very surprised to find me there when they came running back.

678: an Egyptian movie about sexual harassment

678 is an Egyptian movie, made in 2010, about sexual harassment of women in Egypt.
It's a pretty good film and the issues are addressed realistically (the script was partly based on a true story) and respectfully.
Definitely worth the time for anyone who's interested in the subject.

New clashes on Mohamed Mahmoud: Riot police throwing rocks at protesters

First anniversary of Mohammed Mahmoud clashes

The riot police are on top of two buildings in Mohamed Mahmoud - an AUC building and the Lycee Francais - with a bunch of angry protesters down below them.
